Enrolment options

There is a single course for lecture and exercises with separate grading for both parts. Some components count for the lecture, while others will count for the exercises. Neither one is a prerequisite for the other, which means you can pass lecture and exercises independently from each other. It is still recommended to do both lecture and exercise in the same semester. If you do only one, please study the course material for both lecture and exercise.

For the lecture, you can choose whether you want to do short weekly quizzes (WQ-mode) or you do a big exam at the end of the semester (BE-mode). You have to choose the mode at the beginning of the semester before the first quiz. Lecture quizzes and big exam have to be done with physical presence, either at JKU campus or in one of the distance learning centers, there is no online-option. If you fail in WQ-mode, a certificate with a negative grade will be issued. However, you can immediately switch to BE-mode and do the big exam at the end of the semester, which then counts as your second attempt.

For the exercise there will be an exercise sheet every week. The exercise sheet will be published online one week ahead, solutions for the exercises are to be prepared until the next exercise class but need not be submitted. During the exercise class solutions will be presented by the lecturer, questions can be asked, and solutions can be discussed (this is why preparation of the exercises in advance is necessary and beneficial). Grading of the exercises is based on 4 quizzes during the semester, which can be done with physical presence, either at JKU campus or in one of the distance learning centers. In addition, there is an online-option for the exercise-quizzes. There is no big-exam-option for the exercises.

Attendance in the lecture and exercise classes is recommended but not mandatory, both are streamed and recorded.

The course is divided into 4 topics, each consisting of 3 modules. There is one quiz per module. From the 3 quizzes per topic, 2 count for the lecture and the remaining one counts for the exercises. If you only need a grade for the lecture, then you only do the quizzes that count for lecture or the big exam. If you only need a grade for the exercises, then you only do the quizzes that count for exercises.

Note that when you register for the exercises in KUSSS, you are not assigned to an exercise group immediately. This happens only when the registration period is over. If you only do exercises, you are not enrolled into the Moodle course until you are assigned to an exercise-group. If you do lecture and exercises, you are enrolled into the Moodle course immediately, but you can access exercise-related stuff only after assignment to an exercise group.
