Enrolment options

We have a single course for lecture and exercises with separate grading for both parts. Some components count for the lecture, while others will count for the exercises, see details below. Neither one is a prerequisite for the other, which means you can pass lecture and exercises independently from each other.

The lecture is every week on Mondays, the exercise is on Wednesdays. For the exercise there will be an exercise sheet every week. The exercise sheet will be published online one week ahead, solutions for the exercises are to be prepared until the next exercise class but need not be submitted. During the exercise class solutions will be presented by the lecturer, questions can be asked, and solutions can be discussed (this is why preparation of the exercises in advance is necessary and beneficial). Attendance in the lecture and exercise classes is recommended but not mandatory, both are streamed and recorded.

The course is divided into 4 topics, each consisting of 3 modules. The course can be taken either in WQ-mode (weekly quizzes, recommended) or in BE-mode (monthly quiz for the exercise, big exam for the lecture, not recommended). If you fail in WQ-mode, a certificate with a negative grade will be issued. However, you can immediately switch to BE-mode and do the big exam at the end of the semester, which then counts as your second attempt.

WQ-Mode (Recommended)

In each module, you can earn credits through one of the weekly quizzes (15 minutes) and an optional bonus exercise.

In each topic, two modules (those tagged "L") count for the lecture and the remaining third module (the one tagged "E") counts for the exercises. You can earn bonus credits through an optional lab exercise, which comes in three variants: a lecture-lab, an exercise-lab, or a combined-lab. In each topic, you can choose, which lab you want to take.

If you need a grade only for the lecture/exercises, then you only take the respective quizzes.

BE-Mode

The big exam consists of 4 "L"-quizzes (each 25 minutes) at the end of the semester counting for the lecture, and 4 "E"-quizzes (each 15 minutes) during the semester counting for the exercises. Each L-quiz is worth 20 points and the quizzes have to be taken sequentially (one after the other). All other regulations for the quizzes are identical to the weekly quizzes (closed book, physical presence on campus, etc.) in WQ-mode, see above.

If you need a grade only for the lecture/exercises, then you only take the respective quizzes. There are neither bonus exercises nor lab exercises to earn additional credits. Three dates will be offered to take the big exam.
