First time in Austria as EU / European Economic Area / Schengen citizen

1. Registration of stay in Austria - not residence registration:

  • If you leave Austria after the Austrian module, you can skip this section.
  • According to the Austrian law, every EU/EEA/Schengen citizen without Austrian nationality needs to register their stay within 4 months after arrival in case they stay more than 3 months in Austria.
  • IMPORTANT: In case you miss this legal duty you are subject to penalty fee up to € 250 or imprisonment for 10 days.

2. Residence/accommodation registration - main residence:

  • Regardless of the duration of your stay, you need to register your Austrian address/residence.
  • In case you wish to receive the local discount card for public transportation services and more, you need to register your Austrian residence as your Main residence (Haupwohnsitz).
  • Depending on your country of origin that might result in further action to be taken from your side. Please get in touch with local authorities of your country of origin and ask what to do if you have your main residence registered in Austria.

3. De-registration upon leaving (or address update).

  • In case you are in Raabheim, the dormitory does the de-registration for you. You do NOT need to de-register upon you are leaving the dormitory.
  • If you are a resident of another student dormitory ask at the reception whether they do the de-registration upon your departure.
