Course Description:

Membrane separation technologies are of industrial sustainability importance because of their advancements and commercialization due to good product quality, better energy efficiency than conventional separation methods, simple operation, no chemical alteration of constituents, easy scale-up, and better environment suitability.

  • This course introduces you to the membrane science field, methods related to membrane preparation and characterization for polymeric and inorganic membranes, and various fouling mechanisms and modules.
  • A detailed analysis of current hot research topics in membrane science and perspective development in biotechnology, water, and environmental applications will be covered.
  • We will also include the economic aspects and process intensification applied to membrane operations.
  • Various membrane processes such as ultrafiltration, microfiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, and membrane distillation will be presented, and comprehensive team projects will be defined for the final presentation.
  • Engaging exercise problems developed for a better understanding of the topics enable you to think critically about the membrane field and prepare you well to develop your ideas and take the field of membrane science to new heights.

Grading: The grading will be based on performances on the exercises, project teamwork, and the final presentation.

Dates: Every two weeks on Fridays 13:00-15:30 First class: March 12.
